Windows 9x/ME
From IeXwiki
Microsoft first started it's OS linup with DOS. A simple, yet effective operating system that eventaully became the standard for most computer systems. DOS (Disk Operating System) was, however, a text based operating system, meaning that one had to type out any command that was desired. To answer consumer demands, Microsoft came out with a GUI (Graphical User Interface) shell for DOS, known as Microsoft Windows. Though easier than DOS for things like file management, the first few Windows versions weren't pretty, and not very many applications operated in them. This became better over the years and it became very popular with the consumers.
Over time, Windows - then an Operating Environment - became another standard for computers and mainstream applications started to be made for it, and even designed around it. Eventually, Microsoft decided to ditch the DOS operating system and make a new OS with a GUI as it's native operating environment. Launched in early 1995, what better name to give it than "Microsoft Windows 95"? With the familiar name of "Windows", and a new, fresh look and feel, the computing community took to the new OS quite easily. Since then, Microsoft has made many improvements to this OS, and it is now on a high majority of end user's desktops.
