Uxtheme.dll

Windows XP adds the ability for Windows to use "Visual Styles" to change the user interface. However, visual styles must be cryptographically signed by Microsoft to run. In order to use unsigned visual styles, many users patch uxtheme.dll using third party patchers.

Patching Uxtheme.dll

Before you start, go to C:\Windows\system32. Find uxtheme.dll and make a copy of it on your desktop. Rename this file to olduxtheme.dll.bak.

1. Download a patched uxtheme.dll file and save it to the desktop. You can find it at [1].

2. Download Replacer. Extract Replacer to the desktop (create a folder called Replacer and extract the contents of the compressed file).

3. Run replacer.cmd. A command prompt window should appear.

4. Browse to C:\Windows\system32 and find uxtheme.dll. Drag this file into the command prompt window. Press enter.

5. Drag in the unlocked uxtheme.dll from the desktop into the command prompt window. Press enter.

6. Confirm the replacement and wait for Replacer to finish. Press any key when prompted.

Automation

If you do not wish to manually replace uxtheme.dll, simply download and run the UXTheme Multi-Patcher. This version is reported to work with x86 systems.
