After the European Supreme Court ruled that Microsoft was unfairly bundling Windows Media Player (WMP) with Windows XP, effectively killing off competition from other media firms.
The resulting product was intially named Windows XP : Reduced Media Edition, but that was spurned by the European Union for having a derogotary name. Eventually, Microsoft released Windows XP Home Edition N and Windows XP Professional N; exactly the same as their non-N counterparts, but without Windows Media Player.
