Planned Versions for Final Release

Microsoft has announced plans of offering six main versions of Windows Vista. Due to the EU's demands, some versions will have an 'N' variant, signifying a lack of Windows Media Player in order to comply with these demands.

Versions of Windows Vista announced:

  • Starter
  • Home Basic
  • Home Premium
  • Business
  • Enterprise
  • Ultimate

Starter

Aimed at developing countries, Windows Starter 2007 is not branded as Windows Vista at the moment. Instead, it is designed to be low-cost and easy to use, as well as not demanding system resources, in order to run on older or slower machines.

Home Basic

The most basic of the Windows Vista family, Home Basic provides an environment fit for basic use. Ideal uses put out by Microsoft include browsing the Internet, chatting and instant messaging, checking email, and doing basic document creation and editing. Targeting those who are not experienced with Windows, or computer in general, tools are provided to allow a migration of data to ease the upgrade process. Additionally, an easier, faster search tool has also been implemented to expedite the search process and allow anyone to be able to search efficiently.

With the growing popularity of wireless Internet access in the home, tools to make connecting to the wireless source easier have been provided, alongside tools to make connecting to a wired network just as easy. Parental controls and various internet safety tools have been bundled to make Vista the most secure version of Windows yet.

Home Premium

Home Premium offers all of the basic tools that Home Basic offers, but it adds quite a bit more. Perhaps the most noticeable, the new Windows Aero GUI, or graphical user interface, is a new three-dimensional user experience combining eye candy with an efficient way of multi-tasking. The search tool, included with Home Basic too, has been expanded to blend with Home Premium's new Media Center capabilities in this edition of Windows Vista.

Home Premium also features an updated equivalent of Microsoft's own Media Center Edition, an edition of Windows which was only offered bundled with certain PCs previously, incorporated into the operating system. These additions allow a user to view movies and pictures, and listen to music on their computer with the ease of a user-friendly interface designed for use with multimedia. With appropriate hardware, a user can also record both regular TV and HDTV. Easy access to online entertainment will also be a feature in the Media Center portion of Home Premium. With the fairly new release of the XBOX 360 by Microsoft, Microsoft has added in yet another new feature. Interconnecting of the XBOX 360 and the computer will allow multimedia from the computer to be played in multiple rooms of the house.

Home Premium will also include a basic set of applications designed for multimedia editing, similar to Apple's iLife suite. Again, Home Premium incorporates another once separate set of features into Vista. Tablet PC capabilities are included in Home Premium, as well as a more secure set of preferences for connecting to a home or corporate WiFi network. A new feature in laptops, Home Premium supports Sideshow technology, a small integrated display designed to allow the user to access files quickly without turning on the computer.

Business

Enterprise

The biggest thing in the Enterprise version of Vista is the BitLocker encryption technology. This is a whole disk encryption scheme that relies on a hardware subsystem (TPM Trusted Platform Management). The enterprise version is not available to consumers, only through volume license agreements to large customers. Tools are made available to enterprise customers to customize the roll out of Vista. The main tools are the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) and a new unattend.txt file format that provides a single answer file for an unattended Vista install. Specialized images and answer files can be created to streamline the install process.

Ultimate

Windows Vista Ultimate is the most comprehensive edition of Windows Vista. It is the first operating system that combines all of the advanced infrastructure features of a business-focused operating system, all of the management and efficiency features of a mobility-focused operating system, and all of the digital entertainment features of a consumer-focused operating system.
