Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc - A storage medium. A plastic, 5-inch disc that can hold various amounts of data starting from 4.5 gigabytes to 17 gigabytes. 4.5 gigabytes is a single-layered and single-sided disc. This type of DVD uses one physical layer of data on one sides of the disc to store data on. The capacities conclude with 17 gigabytes. This type of DVD uses two physical layers of data on each side of the disc. Formats of this disc include DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD-R DL, and DVD+R DL. The most common use of this type of disc is for video.
